2 NATION’S CITIES WEEKLY
May 23, 2011
MESSAGE FROM NLC’S PRESIDENT
NLC Family,
Our federal lawmakers in
Washington, D.C., are con-
sumed by debate about the
growing federal deficit. While
we may read about it and fol-
low the political maneuverings,
it is all too easy for us local
leaders to take a back seat and
declare the topic outside of our
jurisdiction.
All the details are included
in the advertisement below.
Have you been to the new
NLC website yet? NLC staff
members are waiting for your
feedback so please take the
time when you visit to click on
the link on the home page to
share your comments.
Also, be sure to check out
the latest progress on our NLC
Prescription Discount Card
savings goal of $10 million on
page 3. We are now at a total
of $5.9 million in savings for
the program, with more cities
coming in every week.
One of my priorities for this
year has been to ensure that
all of NLC’s many commit-
tees, councils and constituency
groups are well connected to
the work of the NLC offi-
cers and board of directors. I
recently held a conference call
with the chairs and presidents
of the groups as a continua-
tion of our discussions held at
our meetings in January and
March.
NLC TOWN HALL MEETING: UPDATE ON DEFICIT REDUCTION

ing challenges facing cities.
With concurrent con-
ferences on Green Cities,
Infrastructure, Economic
Development and Your City’s
Families, you should think
about a team of city staff and
elected leaders who can jour-
ney together to the conference
and then return home to your
city, ready to hit the ground
running with the knowledge
gained in Phoenix.
Being in Phoenix also gives
us the opportunity to rein-
force the importance of immi-
gration in this country. We
will be including workshops
and speakers on the topic of
immigration throughout the
four concurrent conferences,
and we will be reminding our
state and federal partners of
the need for comprehensive
immigration reform at the fed-
eral level and the role that local
leaders can play in supporting
immigrant integration in their
communities.
And, finally, as you are all
celebrating Memorial Day, you
will be receiving the new NLC
Calendar, which gives us the
chance to celebrate this great
organization.
Take a look at all the
upcoming events and make
your plans NOW to join me
and your colleagues at these
important gatherings!
